Tablelands Regional Council has extended its foundation partnership with the Tablelands University Centre (TUC) through 2028, with councillors unanimously voting to continue supporting the regional education hub.
The partnership renewal follows the success of the TUC, an initiative of Vocational Partnerships Group (VPG), which has registered more than 200 students since opening in March 2023.
As the foundation partner since establishment, Council’s continued commitment supports the region’s growing population and rising demand for skilled workers in areas like health, education and essential services.
Mayor Rod Marti said Council is proud to back the initiative that delivers for the region.
“The TUC is an extremely valuable resource making qualifications, including tertiary degrees, available right here on the Tablelands – it’s making a very important contribution,” Mayor Marti said.
Councillor Con Spanos emphasised the partnership’s value.
“I think the work that they do there is paramount,” Cr Spanos said.
Students are enrolled across high-priority workforce areas putting them in the pipeline to address critical skills gaps in the region. The student community includes parents, career changers, and regional learners who might otherwise face geographical barriers to tertiary study. Over 60% are the first in their families to pursue higher education.
VPG CEO Maryanne Tranter said the extended partnership allows continued focus on student support.
“Council’s continued investment gives students confidence their education is valued locally. This three-year commitment allows us to plan ahead and deliver the support regional students need to pursue their career goals at home. We’re incredibly grateful for Council’s investment and commitment to keeping talent in the region,” Ms Tranter said.
The centre operates seven days a week from 5am to 10pm, offering facilities and wraparound support for registered post-secondary students enrolled in any Australian tertiary institution, at no cost.
Supported by the Australian Government through the Regional University Study Hubs Program, the TUC is one of 56 centres nationwide working to bridge the education gap for regional students. VPG leads two of these hubs in Far North Queensland, with the Cassowary Coast University Centre opening in 2024.
